Located on Royal city Avenue, better known as RCA, Route 66 is an institution in Bangkok nightlife, having kept the party going in RCA for more than 10 years. It was renovated a few years ago and its new sleek, contemporary look has only added to its appeal and ensured that Route is still packed night after night all week long.
The center of Route 66 is a big indoor disco room where mostly hip hop is played these days. Around the DJ booth, there are numerous tables who fill up with guests and bottles as the evening progresses. The later it is, the more people there are and the more of them are dancing. As the inside fills out, the tables outside are taken and by the end of the night, guest inside as well as outside are all standing up dancing, ensuring the party for all to see.
The crowd at Route 66 is mostly Thai and generally younger. Expect most visitors to be in their early twenties, with the energy to dance as long as the authorities allow them to.
Most people here share a bottle of whisky (or other liquor) with mixers and then drink that all night. Beers are also available along with a few drinks but these are not the norm.
If Route 66 is too full for you, an obvious alternative is neighboring Slim which has a similar concept in equally chic surroundings. Song Saleung in Thong Lor is also up there though a slightly older crowd. Alternatively, if this is all too chic for you and you would prefer to go completely back to the roots, head to Hollywood in Rachada soi 8 with old fashioned Thai style partying, as it is still done outside Bangkok.
